Enhance client custom field functionality

I'm developing an extension that needs some improvements/enhancements to the way the fields work in the client menu - specifically, the fields should be able to:

• Render/operate even when the menu is closed
• Request the showing or hiding of the menu
• Save their own values without having to close the menu
